Scenario: "Classical" Battle for the Baltic Sea
          Created by Scott Witte HARPBBS#163

Background

This scenario represents a "classical" World War III engagement in the
Baltic Sea. It assumes that Warsaw Pact and NATO forces are intact as
they would have been in the early and middle 1980s.

Denmark would be an important objective for the Warsaw Pact in any war
with NATO. Securing Denmark would allow the Soviet Baltic fleet a gateway
into the Atlantic, a clear route for a Southern invasion of Norway (as in
1940), secure a northern flank for the main assault on Germany, and prevent
NATO amphibious landings in East Germany or Poland.

This scenario is a simulation of the Warsaw Pact effort to overrun and
clear the Baltic Sea, thus turning it into a Soviet "lake." In order to
accomplish this mission, the Soviets must subjugate Denmark by taking
Kobenhavn (Copenhagen) and destroying the Danish and West German Baltic
"fleets."

Blue Orders

A Soviet amphibious group is approaching the coast of Denmark. You must
use the forces available to you to intercept and destroy the amphibious
portion of this task force.

Intelligence Brief

The objective of the Soviet task force will no doubt be to land Soviet
Marines at Kobenhavn and take the city. This action will probably
cause the Danish government to surrender.

This action is part of a general invasion of Western Europe by Warsaw Pact
forces. The air war in Europe can be expected to be fierce. You will
have only limited forces available to you -- units of the West German Naval
Air Force, Danish Air Force, Norwegian Air Force, and elements of the British
Royal Air Force. Also available will be West German and Danish Baltic naval
units.

Your forces will be outnumbered. Expect long-range air attacks on your bases.
Long range SAM missiles have been position along the entire southern Baltic
coast by the Warsaw Pact. The Soviet task force will be proceeded by an ASW
group. East German and Polish naval units may also be participating. You
must survive long enough to destroy the amphibious group and keep the
straights closed.

Victory Conditions

Destroy three amphibious and three merchant ships in the task force closing
on Denmark.

Game Notes

This scenario was designed so that the human player would take the NATO (blue)
side. It can only be played in this fashion.

Since the GIUK battle set does not include bases in the Baltic, I have moved
bases from other positions on the map. To keep you from getting confused, I
have included a list that will coordinate the names of the bases in the game
with the actual bases involved in this battle. In the same way, the battle
set does not include Danish or German units. I attempted to select units
which could be considered similar. These selections are also listed below.

Remember, the Warsaw Pact has just invaded Western Europe. There is no doubt
a massive air battle occurring in northern and central Europe. You should not
send any aircraft very far south as they would become entangled in this larger
battle. Try and stick to the limits of the scenario (the Baltic Sea).
